For a collector, “remove the extra packaging” can be an ambiguous instruction. It might mean discarding an ordinary shipping carton. It might accidentally include the illustrated retail box, a numbered sleeve, or the seal that made the item worth buying.
Before arranging forwarding, divide the package into three layers:
- The item: the figure, game, record, component, or other purchase.
- The product packaging: the retail box, sleeve, inserts, labels, and seals that you may want to preserve with it.
- The shipping packaging: the outer carton, padding, and protective layers used to move it.
Some purchases blur these categories. A branded shipping box may itself matter to a collector. If it matters to you, identify it explicitly instead of assuming the warehouse will know.
Send a specific instruction #
Here is a template you can adapt before approving a handling service:
This purchase is a collectible. Please retain the retail box, inserts, labels, and seals. I would like to know whether you can remove only the outer shipping carton while protecting the product packaging. If doing so requires opening a product seal or discarding branded packaging, please confirm with me first. Please also confirm which handling services are available and their fees before proceeding.
This is a request to discuss with the provider, not a guarantee that every warehouse can perform custom handling. If preserving a seal is essential, ask whether the shipment can be processed with that requirement before sending the item to the forwarding address. Do not assume a note can override an inspection requirement.
Give any requested photo a purpose #
“Send a picture” is less useful than “Can you provide a photo of the exterior retail-box corners and the model label without opening the sealed product?” Ask about the availability and cost of that service first. A photo can answer a visible-condition question; it cannot establish authenticity or reveal damage hidden inside a sealed box.
Keep the seller's listing and invoice so you have a reference for what you purchased. Do not ask a forwarding company to certify condition or authenticity unless it explicitly offers that service.
Compare handling choices using an actual quote #
Keeping more packaging can change the final box dimensions. Removing packaging can change protection. Request the available choices and the resulting quote before choosing, particularly when the retail packaging is part of what you want delivered.
If no permitted handling option preserves what matters to you, resolve that before buying. A lower shipping estimate is not a good trade if the parcel arrives without something you intended to keep.
For purchases you are considering forwarding through Viabox, start with the current service FAQ and confirm your destination, item, handling needs, and shipping quote. The right instruction is specific enough that both you and the warehouse understand what must stay in the box.
